One of the biggest issues that we heard voiced at the gates this year at Ribs and Brews, was concerning bringing outside drinks into the event. Concern ranged from health and safety, to financial reasons, to the environment. The Bowmanville Rotary Club listened and we are committed to exploring ways to address these concerns in 2018.
First, some information. At our event, pop and water is sold exclusively by Rotary. In 2017 our club raised $16,089.85 through pop and water sales. Every $2.00 in pop and water sales equals 7 minutes for respite care for a family of a child with special needs. These sales are an important fundraising vehicle at Ribs and Brews.
But we heard you.
We know that not only is it convenient to bring a water container to these events, but that single use plastic water bottles create a massive environmental footprint. Our club, like you, is concerned about the environment. We have just been informed that the Municipality of Clarington has purchased a mobile water bottle refill station for use at events such as ours. This is exciting news for our town and the environment.
However, at Ribs and Brews, there is also a safety related issue. As a condition of our liquor license, the prohibition of outside drinks was mandated upon our club. We will consult with our partners at the AGCO to find an acceptable solution.
As we plan for 2018 we commit to examining how to find a balance between the convenience, the environment, safety, and the club's fundraising goals.
Whatever the result is, we will ensure that the new approach and rules around this issue at our event are clearly and consistently promoted and posted.

2017, our first year at Clarington Fields, was a record setting year! This year we had 75,000 people attend our event. This record attendance resulted in a record amount of money raised.
The Bowmanville Rotary Club is thrilled to announce that $127,950 was raised.
Over the next 12 months, this money will be directed to support many local causes and a few important international causes.
